What to do in a dental emergency

Knocked out tooth

The first step is to find the tooth that has been knocked out. Try to avoid holding the tooth at the root and only by the crown of the tooth (the top). Gently rinse the tooth in milk or saliva if available to remove any debris. If possible, place the tooth gently back in to the socket. If you are unable to replace the tooth, place it in the mouth between the cheek and gum and call your dentist immediately. Time is of the essence in situations like these.

These can sometimes be symptomatic, and other times cause no pain at all. It is important to see your dentist as soon as possible to have this tooth assessed and repaired to prevent further breakage or a sore and costly toothache.

In the event of a toothache, seek an appointment from your dentist to determine the cause and treatment required to relieve your pain. In the interim, try to manage your pain with over the counter pain relief. A hot or cold compress may also aid in relieving symptoms. In the event the pain subsides on its own, we still advise you see a dentist to determine the cause for your dental pain and rule out any further complications that may arise.

Oral lacerations, such as a nasty bite to the lip, cheek or tongue should be brought to the attention of your dentist. Try to clean the area gently with warm salty water, apply pressure and a cold compress to aid in reducing the bleeding.
