What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Not every dental “hiccup” needs an immediate trip to the clinic, but certain symptoms should never be ignored. Delaying treatment for a true emergency can lead to tooth loss or the spread of infection.

Severe or Persistent Toothache

A throbbing pain that keeps you awake at night is usually a sign of infection or nerve damage. If the pain comes with swelling or a fever, see a dentist straight away. An infected tooth may need root canal therapy to save it.

Knocked-Out (Avulsed) Tooth

This is a time-critical emergency. If a permanent tooth is knocked out, hold it by the crown, try to place it back in the socket or keep it in milk, and aim to reach a dentist within 30 minutes. Healthdirect’s dental injury guide explains these first-aid steps in detail.

Broken, Cracked or Chipped Teeth

A minor chip can often wait, but a large fracture that exposes the inner pulp of the tooth is painful and leaves the tooth vulnerable to bacteria.

Abscess or Facial Swelling

Swelling in the gums or face often points to a dental abscess, a pocket of infection. Healthdirect notes that an abscess won’t clear up on its own, and untreated infection can spread to other parts of the body.

Lost Fillings or Crowns

A lost filling or crown leaves the sensitive tooth underneath exposed to pressure and temperature, which can cause intense discomfort. We can repair fillings and replace crowns at the same visit or soon after.

A dental emergency can be frightening. Our team practises gentle dentistry and offers conscious IV sedation for patients who are particularly anxious or need complex emergency procedures.

Steps to Take While Waiting for Your Appointment

If you have a dental emergency, follow these steps before you arrive at our clinic:

  • For a Toothache: Rinse your mouth with warm salt water. Use dental floss to ensure no food is trapped between the teeth. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum, as this can cause burns.
  • For a Knocked-Out Tooth: Handle the tooth by the crown (the top), not the root. Rinse it gently with water if dirty, but do not scrub it.
  • For Swelling: Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce inflammation and numb the area.
  • For a Lost Filling: You can temporarily plug the hole with sugar-free gum or over-the-counter dental cement until you reach us.
